Self published During the 1960s, an interest in Eastern philosophy occurred amongst two schools of avant garde composers. In New York, John Cage's study of Zen was seen at the forefront of the zen-boom and in Tokyo, Toru Takemitsu was a prominent figure drawing on ideas from Japanese aesthetics as part of a scene that became know as the hogakki-boom. The Japanese aesthetic concept of space-time 'ma' can be seen as exemplifying characteristics that caught the interest of both composers during these simultaneously occuring booms. |
